There are two types of opinions when people discover our plan to downsize and live on a sailboat. Not too surprisingly, most people have strong thoughts on this idea. The first response is that this will be an amazing opportunity for our family. These conversations usually focus on the potential experiences and our approaches to this journey.
Other conversations often question our sanity. These conversations focus on “what if xx happens” and often do include reasonable concerns. We try to honestly engage in these discussions to better understand the perceived risks and develop strategies that may mitigate or reduce the chances of occurrence.
This is an unconventional decision and, as with any life decision, incurs risks. However, no lifestyle exists with zero risks. Currently, we reside in a traditional location: a Florida beach town. You can get hit by a bus walking to work, get injured riding a bike, get hit with a tornado, or fall off a ladder trimming a tree.
In our opinion, the reward of living a non-traditional lifestyle allows our family to experience new locations, cultures, and interact with people from all around the world outweighing potential risks. We may be mistaken and decide to end this adventure early, but never want to wonder “what if…”.
Looking forward to meeting you on the sea!
